New Website and Other Updates

When we first built our site, we used Squarespace. It is a great service, but more challenging and less customizable than wordpress, so we switched to a wordpress site. Much better now, in my opinion.

Our last post was about hitting 50 Facebook likes in just a few hours. Well, that momentum kept up and we were able to reach out first weeks goal of 500 likes in just 4 days! Thank you everyone for all of your support. It truly means a lot for you all to hop on board – before we even have any content even!

Filming for The Dork Den mini documentary is more or less finished. We are now in post production, piecing everything together to create a solid storyline. We anticipate the final product being somewhere around 5 minutes long, which is exactly what we hoped for.

Being it was our first documentary, and first time doing anything of this scale, we ran into a few snags along the way. Joe and Greg from The Dork Den have been extremely supportive and kind to us.  We learned a lot of things in these last few weeks that will help us become more successful going forward.

Here is a pano I took with my phone during some of the filming of The Dork Den.

Officially Launched!

Today is our official launch day.

Prior to today, we were pretty much keeping everything under wraps. Our Facebook page had only 6 likes, and nobody heard of us.

This morning, I made the website live and within a few short hours we had 50 Facebook likes, which is a promising start.

Thank you to everyone – and please share on Facebook. The bigger our audience, the bigger our impact.

October 1st will be the launch date of our first video!

Filming B-Roll

Once we have the basic story outline and pre-interview complete, we begin filming B-roll. What this means is that we visit the location and gather as much environmental footage as we can to use as either filler footage, or for putting a visual to what the subject is saying.

We filmed for about an hour and walked away with about 30-45 seconds worth of usable footage. This doesn’t sound like a lot, but it really is.

The filming portion includes: setup, tear down, composition, lighting, camera adjustments, etc.

Here is a still from one of our shots.

First Pre-Interview. First documentary.

Tuesday night, Mike and I met up with our first documentary subject, The Dork Den, to do a pre-interview.   The pre-interview accomplishes several things:

1. It allows the subject to get comfortable in frot of a camera.
2. It gives us a chance to see their personalities.
3. It let’s us figure out what questions we want to ask so that we can build the story we want to tell.

Joe and Greg are super nice guys with a real passion for what they do. We are super excited to share their story.

So, it begins here.

I moved to Mankato in April of 2009 and immediately fell in love with it. The attitude, the culture, the size, the history. Everything. Within a year I knew I wanted to do something bigger for this community, I just didn’t know what yet.
